How to Be a Part of The Sale on the Oyate Trail:

The Oyate Trail Association along with Southeast South Dakota Tourism and Great Lakes of South Dakota Tourism would like to present you with a unique opportunity to draw people into your community at little or no cost to you. This is a promotional effort by the associations above to draw visitors to the Oyate Trail.

"FOLLOW THE SALE ON THE OYATE TRAIL" a 400 mile long Garage Sale in 25 towns from I-29 (N Sioux City) to Hwy 50 and Hwy 18 across South Dakota. (The Oyate Trail).

September 19-21 we will promote the entire route on the web and in newspapers, TV and radio.

Your job is to organize your own community "event."

WHAT? You can do as much or as little as you want. Make it FUN!

This is a great opportunity to pull traffic into town and show off your community, create some excitement and make a little money too.

 IDEAS:

House to house garage sales

Central location in town with vendor tables

Farmer's Market

Service Clubs, church groups, 4-H clubs etc. serving food, ice cream, pop corn etc. (Good fund raiser)

Sell your local "speciality" like Kuchen, Kolachi, or whatever, single or by the box.

Art & Craft show/sale.

Ask stores to have "specials" to draw in customers.

Entertainment in the park, music on main street, street dance.

Signs, banners, balloons around town and out on the highway to draw people into town.

Local businesses will gain with gas and snack purchases, restaurants will see customers and even shops and museums will see more visitors.

We are encouraging towns to have the museums and churches open for visitors to tour. Charge a small admission or sell items as a fund raiser.

Make the event unique to your town.

Combine this with a local event and make it even bigger.

We are providing a poster (in a few days) that you can print and post around town.

Once you have your event planned out, send a paragraph about what you are offering. Example: "City Wide Garage Sales, museum tours, food and vendors on Main Street." We will put your information on the Oyate Trail Website and do press releases including your information.

We hope that you will contact your local paper to ask them to tell about your community's effort in this event.

This is a first time event but it's been done in other states very successfully. Here are some examples from Nebraska and Alabama.

Travel the Trail Junquette
Garage Salers, take note!  If you've dreamed of bargains without end, we have the event for you.  Next September, the Oyate Trail will hold a Trail Junquette.  That means 400 miles of businesses and individuals, from North Sioux City in the south east corner of our state all the way to the Hot Springs in the Black Hills, will be along the Trail with items for sale.  Flea market, arts and craft, garage sale . . . you'll find it somewhere.

Oyate Trail History
Efforts to promote a route along South Dakota's southern border to the Black Hills have existed since the first highway ran through the area.  The Association for the Oyate Trail of Southern South Dakota has been around since the early 1990s, and recent work by a dedicated core group has brought new life to the organization. Please join us!  Email Matt Cerny today for ways you can get on board.  Together we can effectively promote southern South Dakota.
